What is the secret behind FMAV’s success throughout the years? Our people! They make us who we are today and who we will be in the future.  As Canada’s largest independently owned audiovisual company, FMAV has more than 250 staff across seven offices from coast to coast, and it’s our people who make us a different kind of Audiovisual Company.

Because our people make the difference, we thought we’d tell you more about them, and how they’ve helped us become a favourite in the events industry, in an Employee Spotlight series.

In this series, you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. We will talk about what makes them tick, why they come to work each day and what they look forward to doing in their free time?

This month we talked to Alex Huard about his role here at FMAV, his passion for the events industry and his secret talents. Here’s what he had to say:

What is your current role and how long have you been working at FMAV?

I am a MediaLab Content Specialist working out of the Toronto office, for a little over 3 years now.

Tell us about your start at FMAV?

Before FMAV, I had never been exposed to the live event industry in this capacity, and never thought about creating content for a canvas larger than 1920×1080. Before FMAV I had worked for a national news station as a graphics operator and floor director, then at a TV network as a camera operator and editor for a lifestyle and current affairs talk show. I didn’t know much about creating content for large projection surfaces, LED wall or multi-screen installations. I found myself immersed in the world of creating engaging content and experiences for all mediums. My team was really patient and helped me immensely. I have grown as a valuable member of the MediaLab.

What made you want to get into the field?

I am driven and passionate about developing creative and innovative ideas, my position in this company allows me to fulfill that need on a daily basis.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the freedom to explore new trends, software and technology, then determining how they can best be utilized in future events.

Tell us something about your personal life. What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family. My son Hendrix was born December 3rd 2017 and my wife and I are first time parents. The world has a new vibrancy to it. We take great joy and pride in seeing him develop every day. As I mentioned earlier, I am driven to create, whether visually or musically. I enjoy playing the guitar, writing my own music and then trying them out at open mics across the city. I recently completed a feature-length documentary with a friend of mine that we started over 2.5 years ago that we are currently entering into local and global film festivals; and my most recent project is a YouTube series known as “Balcony Sessions”, where I have local artist come over to our condo and play their music on our balcony overlooking the city. The idea is that it gives the artist a piece of marketing material they can use to promote themselves and their music. It’s a way of giving back to a community of artists who work incredibly hard at their craft and need an opportunity to showcase it.
