On Thursday, March 8, 2012 approximately 300 women will gather at the John Innes Community Centre to once again enjoy an afternoon of food, entertainment, art activities, dancing, draw prizes and a gift bag for everyone.  It is a time to celebrate and acknowledge the strengths and talents of women that are often eclipsed by the labels of “homelessness” “addiction” and “mental illness”.

Many of you have supported this event in the past with generous donations and volunteer hours.

Perhaps as you are looking at all the holiday gifts, you might be thinking – “How many soaps, creams, boxes of chocolates do I really need”  or “What we’re they thinking?!” about a sweater etc. that just isn’t you.  We would happily take these items as donations for draw prizes and items for the gift bags.

Here is a list of ways that you could assist us with the event:

Donations for the gift bags: personal care items such as soaps, crèmes (especially for feet and hands), toothbrushes, toothpaste (your dentist is a good source for these), shampoo, conditioner, perfume, make-up (must be new)  gloves/mitts, socks, hats. Perhaps friends and/or family would be willing to ask their colleagues at work to donate such items.  The committee could arrange for someone to pick up any donations.

Donations for draw prize items:   carry bags (back packs, sports bags), blankets/bedding, clothing (medium to larger sizes are more popular), jewellery. All items need to be new and preferably in the original packaging.

Food donations:  contacting local restaurants, deli, grocery stores to ask if they could donate food dishes/items for the luncheon.  We pride ourselves in serving food that reflects the diversity of the women who attend the event.  Also, home baking for the dessert table is always popular.

  • Volunteer hours – We need many volunteers on the day of the event which includes not only during the event itself but also for set up in the morning and clean up after the festivities. This year we are having a sit down meal for the women so we will need more volunteers as servers.   If you are not able to be there for the full day, a two- three hour shift would be a big help.  To volunteer your time. please contact:   Andrea Bright at andreab@ona.org .

The success of this event has always been the result of the generosity of many of our friends  in the community.

Thank you for your consideration.
